How to read your result

Each age has a group

Each age uses the numbers for its age group from a national CDC survey. For example, ages 20 to 39 share the same numbers.

Women and men

Each answer shows the median for everyone, plus separate medians for women and men, or for girls and boys.

Normal range from age 12

From age 12, a normal resting heart rate is 60 to 100 bpm. The percentiles show where a heart rate falls among people the same age.

How to measure

  1. Sit quietly for 5 minutes. Skip caffeine and exercise for an hour before.
  2. Count your pulse at the wrist for 30 seconds and double it.
  3. Use the average of a few mornings, not one reading taken after climbing stairs.

Common questions

Short answers about how these calculators work.

No. The median is the middle value, so half of people are lower and half are higher. The average can be a beat or two different.
