What it means

A healthy weight fits a range of heights. At a given weight, your BMI goes down as your height goes up. The heights in your answer are the ones that give a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9.

We don't round BMI up. We show BMI to one decimal place and drop the rest instead of rounding. So 24.96 shows as 24.9 and still counts as a healthy weight.

BMI doesn't tell the whole story. BMI doesn't account for muscle, bone, age or sex. Two adults with the same BMI can have different health.

How BMI works

  1. BMI is your weight divided by your height squared. If you use pounds and inches, multiply the result by 703.
  2. For the most accurate number, weigh yourself in the morning and measure your height without shoes.
  3. Your category comes from the BMI with the extra decimals dropped, not rounded.

Common questions

Short answers about how these calculators work.

The CDC defines a healthy weight as a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 and overweight as 25.0 to 29.9. We drop extra decimals, so 24.96 stays 24.9.

No. The CDC describes BMI as a screening tool. It doesn't measure body fat, and it can't diagnose a health condition.
