What it means
In kilograms, the usual range for a 5-month-old is 6.2 to 9.0 kg for boys and 5.6 to 8.4 kg for girls (5th to 95th percentile).
For a 5-month-old, the median for boys is 0.6 kg more than for girls (7.5 vs 6.9 kg).
Growth charts for babies. For babies and toddlers under 2, we use World Health Organization growth charts. From age 2, we use CDC growth charts. US doctors follow the same switch.
What's a usual range? Most healthy babies are between the 5th and 95th percentiles. Many healthy babies are above or below that range. Doctors look at the trend over several checkups, not one weight.
Percentiles aren't grades. The 50th percentile is the middle: half of babies weigh more and half weigh less. It isn't a target weight.
How to measure your baby
- Weigh your baby without clothes or a wet diaper, on a scale set to zero.
- Write down the weight to one decimal place, in pounds or kilograms.
- Use the same scale at the same time of day when you compare.

Common questions
Short answers about how these calculators work.
Why do some ages use WHO charts and others CDC charts? In the US, doctors use World Health Organization growth charts from birth to 2 years and CDC growth charts from age 2. We follow the same switch.
Is a child above the 95th percentile unhealthy? Not from one number. A percentile shows where a child falls compared with others the same age. Your child's doctor looks at it along with height, growth over time and a checkup.
